Common Causes Of Flickering Lights

Flickering lights are a common electrical issue every homeowner faces at some point. Most people ignore occasional flickering, considering it a minor annoyance and inconvenience. But when lights begin to flicker regularly, it is a telltale sign of an underlying issue with the electrical system. The problem can be severe enough to jeopardize the safety of the home and family. Thousands of home electrical fires occur nationally due to malfunctioning electricity, resulting in hundreds of casualties and billions of dollars in property damage. Therefore, it is important to look into the potential causes of flickering lights and solutions to fix them.

Let us look at the most common causes of flickering lights to help determine the best course of action.

Loose bulb

When the issue exists with only one light, the bulb can be the culprit. A bulb receives an inconsistent power supply if it is not properly screwed in the socket, leading to flickering. Changing the bulb or ensuring that it is secured tightly in its socket is one of the easiest ways to fix a flickering light. Fluorescent bulbs are likely to flicker more in a cold room, and LEDs blink when connected to an old or incorrectly sized dimmer switch.

Circuit overload

An overloaded circuit is a potential cause if the lights flicker or dim only while turning on major appliances like washing machines, air conditioners, or dishwashers. These large appliances draw a significant amount of energy as they start up, overloading the circuit and causing the lights to flicker briefly and infrequently. Call an electrician to diagnose the appliances on that circuit or install new circuit breakers if the flickering is more consistent and severe and lasts longer than a few seconds.

Faulty wiring

Faulty wiring is a common cause of flickering lights and a leading cause of electrical fires. Wiring can come loose due to incorrect installation, general wear and tear, and age. In addition to this, outdated breakers, connectors, and loose connections anywhere in the electrical system, including light, outlet, or the switch box, can cause arcing or overheating. Call the pros to inspect the electrical system if you suspect loose connections.

Voltage issues

When the voltage fluctuates or drops suddenly, lights may flicker throughout the house. Use a voltmeter to check whether the voltage output of the circuit is between 115 and 125. Call an electrician if the voltage varies significantly from these levels.

A faulty switch

Lights may also flicker when a switch is worn out or becomes faulty.  If you notice the fixture switch is loose or wiggling, call an electrician to repair or replace the switch.

Utility service issue

The cause behind flickering light sometimes is an issue with the electrical company. Check with the neighbors to see if they are also facing the same problem. If they are, call the utility company to inform them about the situation to make the necessary repairs.

Lights can flicker due to minor issues or indicate a severe electrical problem. Most homeowners do not have the required training and expertise to work on the home electrical system. Avoid DIY electrical works and get in touch with a licensed electrician for flickering lights or any other electrical issue.
